City College claimed its first win of the season Saturday, defeating Cabrillo College 5-1 in the early game of a doubleheader.
Brendon Shoemake, freshman pitcher from La Canada High School, took a no-hitter into the fifth inning in a dominant performance.
The Vaqueros lost the second game to Cabrillo in dramatic fashion. They came back from an 8-1 deficit— only to fall 10-9.
Shoemake, who didn’t allow a hit to Cabrillo until facing two outs in the fifth inning of the first game, allow one run on three hits in the 5-1 victory.
City College fell behind early in the second game, but rallied back scoring four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to claim a 9-8 lead. Eli Michaels, one of the Vaqueros few returning starters, batted in four runs and crossed the plate three times himself in a valiant effort to try and sweep the doubleheader.
It just wasn’t enough as Cabrillo scored in the seventh and eighth innings each to win the late game 10-9.
City College will begin a three-game series against Saddleback at 6 p.m. on Friday in Mission Viejo. The games will carry into Saturday where they will also play at noon and 3 p.m.
