The City College women’s basketball team defeated Sequoias 68-45 Saturday night in their home opener to improve to a 2-2 record.
Sophomore guard Nanice Kollee led the Vaqs with 14 points and three assists while sophomore Imelda Bealer balanced the scoring with 13 points, making two-of-three from three-point land, and forcing five turnovers.
Freshmen Jennifer Jimenez and Brooke Amenta also contributed to the scoring with nine and seven points, respectively. On top of that, Amenta hauled in nine rebounds, while sophomore Leigh Cullinan grabbed six rebounds of her own.
Head coach Sandrine Krul is pleased with the team’s depth and balanced scoring.
“We have a system where we don’t need one star player scoring 30 points a night,” said Krul. “We rely on everybody.”
With 14 freshmen, the young Vaquero team will play a “tough schedule in preparation for conference,” Krul said.
“If everyone comes to practice ready to learn, the wins will take care of themselves,” Krul said. “We’ve got to enjoy the process.”
The Vaqs will take on San Diego Mesa at 7 p.m. Thursday at home and will begin conference play Jan. 5 on the road against Moorpark.
