Records fall at track and field meet

City College track and field freshman, Erika Schaeffer debuted for steeplechase and broke into the history book as the third fastest time in school history, clinching an automatic qualification for the So Cal playoff.

Schaeffer earns a spot on the top-10 history list and she finished fourth place. Her time of 11.55.89 seconds is the third fastest time in Western State Conference this year.

“Erika did a great job today in her debut steeplechase, she ran a smart race and built her confidence,” said head coach Fickerson. ” Every water jump got better than the one before it, she has a bright future in the event.”

5000-meter runner Samantha Dougherty finished third place and was a second off but broke into the Vaqueros top-10 all-time list with her time of 19:29.54.

“The athletes really rose the occasion today against some very strong competition,” said head coach Fickerson. “I’m really proud of how we competed today.”

Aeryus Holloway took second in the B Section of the men’s triple jump and moved into 10th place on the school’s all-time record list.

Casey Russell posted a personal best with a shot toss of 10.73m and Catalina Cisneros notched a personal best with a 35.47m discuss throw.

Before the start of this season, the goal for the season was to seal a playoff birth and exceed last year’s results. City College is finding themselves right on track toward fulfilling their target.

“Our throwers put up a lot of good marks today,” Fickerson said. “Casey and Catalina especially shone with two personal best each.”

The Vaqerous next meet is at 2 p.m. Friday, March 19 at the WSC north in Ventura.
