The Associated Student Government (ASG) met on Oct. 17 where they chartered new clubs and spoke on wellness initiatives.
Alexa Rokos, Girls Flag Football Club president, presented her inspiration behind starting the club. She shared how she played prior in high school, along with those who have expressed interest in coaching for the team.
Growing in popularity, the club is anticipated to reach at least 40 members, with 24 girls already on the team.
“The purpose of the club is to get flag football started here, but make it an official sport at the City College,” Rokos said.
She is currently working with the athletic director to schedule field space for games. ASG then approved the club.

ASG then approved the Active Minds Club, an established organization that is a part of over 1,000 schools in the United States. It encourages conversations surrounding the topic of mental health.
The club intends to implement peer-led mental health programs on campus where students can feel heard and supported.
Lacey Peters, co-chair of the Mental Health Counseling Department at City College, has planned to help with the development of Active Minds.
“We could do some mental health first-aid training and suicide prevention training to build a safe network,” Peters said.
The Pre-health Club pitched a budget proposal to ASG in order to fund their club outreach efforts such as showing elementary school students scientific models to get them more engaged and interested in medical careers.
President of the club, Adrian Ortiz shared during the presentation that in the future they want others to get a more hands-on experience. They will reach out to the EMT department to see if they can do something for the club to prepare students in advanced practices.
For club grants, ASG will be doing a Interclub Council (ICC) meetings once a month in Campus Center Room 217. Presidents of each club on campus will attend to ask for any funding that is needed.
ASG has been helping put together a Halloween event that will include trick or treating and is meant to provide a festival type atmosphere. Many clubs and organizations will be present to promote and join in on the festivities. The date has yet to be determined.
Alexandra Raphael, ASG’s Isla Vista (IV) representative, has partnered with UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) and City College students to inquire the pros and cons of living in IV. Raphael has been in communication with college students residing there to discover whether there is a common thing happening in IV that she could assist on improving or fixing.
ASG’s next meeting will be held Oct. 24 from 9 to 11 a.m.
