The Student Senate marched to demonstrate against increased educational costs.

A total of 14 students joined thousands of others from 122 community colleges around the state in the annual March in March demonstration in Sacramento.

“We’re all very excited,” said Arielle Valenzuela, Student Senate public relations officer. “Students from UC, CSU and California Community colleges—we all go up to Sacramento and pretty much rally and then march along the streets to try and promote affordable higher public education for students. It’s huge!”

City College is making cuts in all departments, and the student tuition fee is increasing with another $10, up to $46, for the next academic year.

“I think it’s important for students to stand up and let the legislators know that we’re here and that we are being negatively affected by it and by the laws that they are pursuing,” said J.J. Englert, president of the Student Senate. “We are experiencing it first hand. So, whether or not they have made those decisions for a reason they should see the impact they have caused on us.”

Last year more 20,000 college students participated in the march.

The Senate provided all the students who signed up on time with transportation, lodging and $45 dollar a student per day to pay for food. The attendees left campus at midnight Sunday and returned the next day.

“We have paid a lot of money to ensure that any student could join us on the trip and didn’t have to worry about their financial situation,” Englert said.

The amount was paid out of the student representative fund to which every student donates a dollar to when paying the enrollment fee.
