Workshops available to develop student skills

Teachers will give extra credit to students participating in free workshops being offered at the Gateway and the Cartwright Learning Resource Center.

The Gateway Center and LRC offer a number of free workshops to students who want to improve or address a particular struggle they many have. “Math Confidence”, “Test Taking Skills”, “Stress Management” and “Note Taking Strategies” are just a few examples of the workshops offered.

Associate Professor Scott Brewer is an academic advisor and facilitator at the Gateway Center.

“There is a really big jump from high school to college that I think people feel when they get here and the skills and attitudes that are expected at the college level are not always taught in high school,” Brewer said.

Incentive to attend, many teachers offer students extra credit if they go to the workshops in addition to their normal scheduled classes. Workshops are usually an hour long and a slip of paper is given at the end, which students bring to their teachers for extra credit.

Upcoming workshops at the Gateway Center are “Overcoming Procrastination” on March 4, “Memory Techniques & Study Skills” on March 18, “Overcoming Procrastination” on March 25, “Test Taking Skills” on April 22 and “Stress Management” on April 29.

They will be held 1:10 to 2 p.m. on Fridays at the Gateway Center located in ECC 33, east campus. For more workshops at the Learning Center visit http://www.sbcc.edu/clrc/workshops.php.

If students are unable to attend the Thursday and Friday workshops, the LRC provides students with the convenience of workshop DVDs for checkout. After viewing, a receipt is given to students that need confirmation for their teachers.

The workshops are open for every student who would like to improve core-learning skills. Brewer says, “If it were up to me everybody would go to these workshops.
