Golf Classic raises funds for Athletic Department

A capacity field of 120 golfers attended City College’s annual Golf Classic Fundraiser that aids over 400 student athletes in 17 sports at La Cumbre Country Club March 15th.

“This money allows SBCC to have a comprehensive athletic program,” said City College Athletic Director Ellen O’Connor. “It provides support for student athletes to excel in the classroom, and on the field.”

The beautiful weather served as a proper backdrop to the all day event that honored several City College student athletes as well as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Cottage Health System, Ron Werft.

“Werft did a terrific job at the event in indentifying the vital partnership between City College and the Cottage Health System,” said O’Connor.

Cottage faculty funding has allowed hospital settings for students to practice their skills under the guidance of highly qualified staff. Werft requested having a City College nursing student placed in his group to golf with him for the day.

This year’s event was also unique because it commemorated City College’s 100th year anniversary, celebrating it’s founding and service to the community of Santa Barbara.

“You couldn’t have asked for a better day to hold the event,” said O’Connor. “The country Club served as a gracious host, on a tremendous setting.”

Faculty and student athletes from SBCC volunteered at the event by helping caddy and serve as witnesses for golfers perusing the hole-in-one prizes.

A key aspect of this years classic was emphasizing the “huge commitment” it is to be a student athlete, and how important these types of fundraisers are to the success of City College’s athletic program, said O’Connor.

O’Connor called their participation “absolutely essential to the success of the event.” She said the personal commitments that these students have to make really show who they are as people. The opportunity for them to interact with participants in the fundraiser under a common cause was “magic.”

The amount of money grossed at the fundraiser won’t be tallied until later in the week, however judging by the capacity crowd, O’Connor believes that they will reach their goal of 25,000 dollars raised.

While no one was able to sink the 50,000-dollar putt, O’Connor called the competition “fierce” saying it was a great end to a great day.
