On Saturday, more than 100 City College students and faculty participated in the 21 annual United Day of Caring. The Day of Caring is a nation-wide event organized by the non-profit United Way in which volunteers work on projects to improve their communities.

After the kick-off event at the Page Youth Center on Hollister Avenue, three separate teams hailing from City College were sent to various locations around Goleta and Santa Barbara. One of the teams worked in City College’s own Landscape Garden where a group of volunteers including the American Sign Language Club and the cheerleading team, were making mulch for the plants, clearing surface detritus and smoothing down the walkways through the garden.

Helping direct the group was Dean Dr. Douglas Hersh, who oversees Environmental Horticulture as well as other departments. Hersh said that, in addition to being used as an “outdoor laboratory” for the Horticulture Program, the garden is “SBCC’s crown.”

At the Orfalea Early Learning Center another group of 20 City College volunteers were renovating and cleaning the facility. The Learning Center is used as a day care for campus staff and students, as well as a workspace for City College’s Early Child Education Program.  “We could not have accomplished what we got done today without their help,” said Elizabeth Rizo, the director of the Learning Center, who lead the group, “I think it was such a successful event…they were so gracious and helpful.”
