Ceremony to honor graduates

Close to 400 students will graduate in the class of 2011 and be recognized at the Commencement ceremony on May 20.

The total number of students who applied for degrees is approximately 1,628. This number includes those from summer and fall 2010, and spring 2011. Out of that number, 380-400 students are eligible to walk and participate at the graduation ceremony, said Cindy Salazar, administrative assistant.

“I usually put out 2,200 chairs and they all get filled with people,” Salazar said.

This year’s Commencement speaker will be Sam Shipley, a linebacker on City College’s football team who is transferring to the University of Maine.

“Sam Shipley is best fitted to represent and send a memorable message to the class of 2011,” said Dr. Ben Partee, dean of educational programs.

In addition to Sam Shipley, there will be speeches made by Superintendent-President Dr. Andreea Serban and Ignacio Alarcon, president of the academic senate. Current City College student and Glee club co-president, Myron Aguilar, will sing the national anthem at the ceremony.

It will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Friday May 20 at the Student Services Plaza, East Campus.

Students’ family and friends are welcome, but are advised to consider parking limitations on campus.

Following the ceremony, a reception will be held at the Memorial Plaza courtyard behind the Student Services Building.
