Marketing students hosts international fashion show

Marketing students will showcase outfits with themes ranging from Backstreet Boys and Village People to Euro Style at the annual International Fashion Show.

The event, sponsored by the Marketing Club, comprises two shows scheduled on April 22 at the Fé Bland Forum on West Campus. It is one of several activities set this spring to raise money for the club and its causes. Last year the club’s fashion show filled the forum.

“Last show, everyone was so beautiful. This year it’s going to be even better,” said club Vice President Fredrik Trygve.

“It’s going to be a feast for your eyes,” added club President Genevieve Swords.

Students from six marketing classes are involved in the fashion show. As a class project, they’ve been divided into small groups where they need to develop a theme and create costumes based on their theme. The students themselves will act as models.

“So many people are working together at this event,” said Trygve. “The models will be fabulous; it’s going to be a great time.”

Marika Silander, marketing student and model for the show said she’s most excited to see how the show will turn out with the large diversity of themes and outfits.

“It’s been really fun hanging out and brainstorming ideas,” Silander said, referring to her group whose theme is the French Riviera. “It’s going to be an awesome show and fun experience.”

Another fundraiser they’ve had is selling coupons for the fast food chain Carl’s Jr. They were bought at a discount for $1 and sold for $5. Their target is $500 and they’ve already raised $250 in two weeks.

A car wash fundraiser is scheduled for 10 a.m., April 9 at the K-mart parking lot in Goleta, which was moved from an earlier date due to poor weather conditions.

Most of the money they’ve raised this semester is going towards the fashion show, and whatever is left will go towards a field trip to Disneyland they’ve planned for April 30. The total price tag of $2,500 will allow approximately 35 members to attend and it will be covered entirely by the club’s various fundraisers.

Besides raising money for the fashion show and Disneyland field trip, the club also raises money for larger causes. They have arranged and promoted a charity concert where all proceeds will go towards building a school in Rwanda, Africa.

This will be the first benefit concert City College has ever put on, and although the event is campus based, it is open to the public and expected to be “full of energy,” said Business Administration Professor Julie Brown.

“It [the event] is students doing something, and making a difference in the lives of people they may never meet,” Brown said. “It’s purely from the heart.”
