Mischief on the Mesa: Suspect linked to Oceano Avenue stabbing and Cliff Drive robbery

Police have discovered that a man arrested for stabbing a 21-year-old man on Oceano Avenue last month was also involved in a strong arm-robbery on the Mesa in February.

Christian Ibarra, 23, was arrested on March 26 after police received a search and arrest warrant in the 100 block of Glen Ellen Drive in Ventura. Ibarra is being charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, and criminal street gang enhancement. Ibarra was booked at Santa Barbara County Jail with bail set at $100,000. Ibarra has pled not guilty to all four charges.

“We feel we have enough evidence to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt,” Deputy District Attorney Mary Barron said.

Both cases are still under investigation.

Police arrived at 1:48 a.m. on March 17, after receiving reports of a stabbing that occurred at 123 Oceano Avenue, according to a police report.

Upon arrival, officers stopped a vehicle in the area and discovered a male victim suffering from stab wounds to the upper torso. Friends of his were in the process of bringing him to the hospital. Medical personnel then took him to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he was taken into the intensive care unit.

Sgt. Lorenzo Duarte, public information officer for the Santa Barbara Police Department, said that the victim is possibly a student from Alan Hancock College in Santa Maria.

Ibarra could face life in prison with the possibility of parole if he is found guilty on the charges of attempted murder.

During the investigation of the stabbing incident, detectives also discovered that Ibarra was involved in a strong-arm robbery that occurred on Feb. 13 in the 1900 block of Cliff Drive. Barron, who is overseeing the case, said that allegations have been made that connect Ibarra’s robbery charges with his involvement in Santa Barbara’s West Side Gang.

Ibarra will appear in court next Monday to set a date for his preliminary hearing.
