Former student sentenced for harassment, banned from campus

A former student arrested last spring for harassing phone calls to a female student was sentenced Friday and ordered to stay off campus.

The defendant, Mark Bradshaw, 22, was also arrested in April 2008 for “sexual battery by restraint” against the same woman on campus. But after a plea bargain was reached by the District Attorney’s Office, Bradshaw was sentenced for the phone calls only.

“I’m glad we were able to work with the DA to keep this person off of our campus,” said Erik Fricke, director of Campus Security.

Superior Court Judge Clifford Anderson Friday sentenced Bradshaw to serve two days in county jail, three years probation, and to stay off the City College grounds. The judge also ordered that Bradshaw must stay away from the female student he harassed.

After his sentencing, Bradshaw declined to comment to The Channels.

Deputy District Attorney Elizabeth O’Brien did not comment on why Bradshaw was charged with the lesser crime of harassment.

According to the campus security log, the female student told security officers – and later police – that she was outside the IDC on April 21 when Bradshaw slammed her against the wall. She told officers he grabbed her breasts, stuck his tongue out at her, and then ran into the IDC.

Security officers then called the Santa Barbara Police Department, who arrested Bradshaw. The female student then told police that Bradshaw had been making harassing calls to her on and off months before the incident.
