Dance program’s highly praised ‘Visions’ to be screened this weekend

The popularity of last month’s dance performance has prompted the team to create a film for screening, opening up the inventive production to more viewers.

“Visions, Dreams & Memories” was directed by instructor Pam Lappen’s dance classes on Oct. 23 and 24.

Working on a shoestring budget without a performance space due to the Garvin Theatre’s reconstruction, her crew worked to make a production with a wide range of costumes. This was recreated as the classes filmed performances on Nov. 6 in the East Campus Lifescape Garden.

“People kept on calling for it,” Lappen said. “These girls were exhausted so we decided to call in Katherine Bennett to shoot it.”

She said Bennett, a professional filmmaker, helped capture the fairy-like atmosphere with attention-grabbing shots and angles.

“It’s fun, they’re very professional, focused,” Bennett said as she worked with the cast. The project was completely student run, as they created every element of the production.

Lappen initially handpicked student Nikki Rossignol to create the poster art, but saw she could also lend a hand making the elaborate costumes. The costumes were made from scratch with consideration for the dancers’ mobility. She also had to make them durable.

Rossignol, as well as the whole cast, rehearsed extensively for performances. Shows sold out and eager audiences called requesting more. These girls delivered by adding two more evening shows to their already hectic schedule.

The decision was mutual when deciding to bring in a professional to shoot the project. The cast was tired, but eager to expose the talents that were new to some.

“Some of these girls have never even danced before,” Lappen said.

The energy and enthusiasm was evident with students such as Skylar Harrison. She plays “Earth” in the performance, moving freely among the garden with various hand gestures and seamless transitions.

After shooting on the sunny November afternoon, the student cast thanked Lappen for the “artistic freedom and creative license” they had received throughout the improvisational piece.

Everyone played a vital role in the creation of this project, even Lappen’s assistant, Molly Pennette. She would cheer the girls on, and they later thanked her.

“Molly was too awesome!” they yelled in unison.

Angelica Smith, cast as the “Spirit of Love,” has been dancing since she was 17 years old.

She sat graciously in a light pink ensemble that flowed freely in the air and captured the essence of romance while she talked about working with Bennett.

“It was really cool, I trusted her, I followed her direction,” Smith said.

Cast member Samantha Harris also wrote songs used in the production.

“Visons, Dreams & Memories” will be shown at 8 p.m. Nov. 20 and 21 in the P.E. building Room 113. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students. For reservations, call (805) 892-3732.
