Enjoying more than just a tan and a good time at the beach, the City College men’s volleyball team fundraised $1,000 for their team by hosting the first costume volleyball tournament at East Beach Saturday.

“It’s a great day at the beach that we want to turn into an annual event,” said Head Coach and tournament organizer Donal McGraw. “This is going to grow and grow every year.”

The tournament consisted of eight teams with costumes, which included the Ninja Turtles, a Lakers team, G.I. Joes, Caddyshack golfers, and a guy wearing a horse head, tail and saddle over his Speedo.

“I’m here to support City College,” said the horse wearer, Armen Zakarian, who plays volleyball for UCSB and was named City College’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2004.

“This is such a fun event and I’m glad it finally happened,” Zakarian said.

At the end of the day, Caddyshack beat Team Tron 2-1, to win the first-place prize.

“We’ve wanted to do something the last few years,” said Caddyshack teammate and AVP Tour player Ben Koski. “We’re going to make it a big thing at the end of the summer, just come out and have fun.”
