Vaquero men’s soccer team battled to a scoreless draw against Glendale Friday night at La Playa Stadium.

City College dominated Glendale in shots (24-13) and shots on goal (8-3) but the defending WSC Champions couldn’t find an opening against a solid defense.

“We came out very well as a team,” said mid-fielder Winston Lyons. “At the end of the day, we couldn’t get it in the back of the net.”

The Vaqueros (3-4-1) barely let Glendale (1-7-1) touch the ball and dominated the start of the first half.

In second half stoppage time, freshman midfielder Adam Colton had a give-and-go break away opportunity with Brayden Jeworski that could have sealed the victory for the City College.  Colton’s shot toward the near right post was blocked by Glendale leading to a Jeworski corner kick. The corner was well placed and Colton got a head on it but missed a few feet right of the net.

“All we needed was that one bit of luck and we would have scored early in the first half and made it a comfortable game,” said Colton. “I had a couple of chances at the end.”

Sisterson was happy the way his team played but disappointed in the outcome.

“We were happy the way they were playing, we just felt we had to keep it the same in the next 45 minutes and the goals will come,” Sisterson said. “To have so much possession in the game, I’m a little bit disappointed.”

The Vaquero’s kept the heat on the Glendale defense, peppering them with shots on goal.

Sisterson was excited with the play of forward Sammba Sowe who had multiple scoring opportunities.

“I need to work on my affectivity,” said Sowe. “I need to score when I have the chances.”

In the last five games, the Vaqueros have scored two goals while also allowing two.

“That’s something we take a pride on, defending well.” Sisterson said. “We will work on our finishing, because if you can’t hit the target, you can’t score goals. “

The Vaqueros takes on L.A Mission at 3 p.m. Tuesday Sep 25 at L.A Pierce (Woodland Hills.)
